Countess Alexandra Tolstoy was the youngest daughter and secretary of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. The Bolsheviks imprisoned Alexandra Tolstoy in 1920 but she was installed as the director of the Tolstoy museum in Yasnaya Polyana the next year. She left the Soviet Union in 1929, and settled in the United States, where she founded the Tolstoy Foundation. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1941
Elena Varneck, 1891-1976, was a Russian American historian. Translator at the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C., for the Provisional Government, 1928-29. Instructor of Russian language at Stanford University
